Steps to your CDL (federal minimums)
- Choose your class (A, B or C) and endorsements.
- Get a DOT medical exam from a provider on the National Registry and a medical examiner's certificate.
- Pass the knowledge tests at the state agency to get your commercial learner's permit (CLP).
- Hold the CLP at least 14 days and practice with a qualified CDL holder. A CLP is valid for up to one year (some states less).
- Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a registered provider.
- Pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control and road test, in English.
- Get your CDL. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.
What is different in this state
- Learner permit (CLP)
After getting a CLP you have 180 days to schedule and finish the road skills test; you can resubmit your forms to extend the permit one time for another 180 days. Hold it at least 14 days before the skills test.
- Age
You must be at least 18; you must be 21 for a school bus or hazmat endorsement or to drive interstate. Drivers under 21 get a K (intrastate only) restriction.
- Also important
The Alaska manual says you must have held a valid driver license for at least 1 year before applying for a CDL.
- Knowledge tests
Drivers transferring a license from another state must also pass the non-commercial general knowledge test (and the motorcycle test if they have that privilege).
State-only topics in the manual
- Alaska introduction: age and 1-year license rule, medical self-certification, implied consent penalties.
- Alaska chart of CDL classes, endorsements and restrictions (including K intrastate only), plus list of DMV offices.
