Steps to your CDL (federal minimums)
- Choose your class (A, B or C) and endorsements.
- Get a DOT medical exam from a provider on the National Registry and a medical examiner's certificate.
- Pass the knowledge tests at the state agency to get your commercial learner's permit (CLP).
- Hold the CLP at least 14 days and practice with a qualified CDL holder. A CLP is valid for up to one year (some states less).
- Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a registered provider.
- Pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control and road test, in English.
- Get your CDL. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.
What is different in this state
- Fees
Knowledge or endorsement test $5 each; skills test $200 ($10 to the DL office, up to $190 to the examiner); learner permit $29; CDL $30 (3-year, age 18-21), $40 (4-year) or $60 (8-year); seasonal CDL $44.
- Age
You must be 18 to apply; 18-, 19- and 20-year-old CDL holders get the K (Idaho intrastate only) restriction.
- Also important
Skills tests are given by private examiners listed by region. Idaho also offers a Seasonal CDL for certain farm-service jobs: valid 180 days in 12 months within 150 miles, no Class A, passenger or most hazmat, and only twice in a lifetime.
