Steps to your CDL (federal minimums)
- Choose your class (A, B or C) and endorsements.
- Get a DOT medical exam from a provider on the National Registry and a medical examiner's certificate.
- Pass the knowledge tests at the state agency to get your commercial learner's permit (CLP).
- Hold the CLP at least 14 days and practice with a qualified CDL holder. A CLP is valid for up to one year (some states less).
- Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a registered provider.
- Pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control and road test, in English.
- Get your CDL. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.
What is different in this state
- Learner permit (CLP)
An Indiana CLP is valid for 1 year, and passed CDL knowledge tests also count for 1 year.
- Knowledge tests
If you fail a CDL knowledge test you may retake it the next business day; only one attempt per test per day is allowed.
- Age
You must be 18 for a CLP; you must be 21 to drive interstate or to apply for a school bus endorsement.
- Also important
Before getting a CDL you must watch a human-trafficking awareness video (state law HEA 1196-2023). Skills tests are taken at BMV-approved test sites, and non-domiciled CLP/CDLs are limited to H-2A, H-2B and E-2 holders.
State-only topics in the manual
- Indiana-specific supplement: CLP requirements, endorsement and restriction codes (including restricted agricultural CDL B), non-domiciled rules, retest rules and out-of-state transfers.
