Steps to your CDL (federal minimums)
- Choose your class (A, B or C) and endorsements.
- Get a DOT medical exam from a provider on the National Registry and a medical examiner's certificate.
- Pass the knowledge tests at the state agency to get your commercial learner's permit (CLP).
- Hold the CLP at least 14 days and practice with a qualified CDL holder. A CLP is valid for up to one year (some states less).
- Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a registered provider.
- Pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control and road test, in English.
- Get your CDL. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.
What is different in this state
- Fees
A CDL permit costs $13; a new CDL with testing costs $41 ($18 issuance, $15 test, $8 photo) plus $10 per endorsement; the CDL skills exam is $15 and a skills retest $10.
- Also important
Kansas issues non-domiciled CDLs only to holders of H-2A, H-2B or E-2 visas with a valid passport and I-94 or I-797A. Skills tests need an appointment at a CDL testing office and take about 1 to 1.5 hours.
Where this state's manual differs
- 11 Kansas does not allow memory aids during the vehicle inspection test; the national text lets you use the provided checklist during the test.
