- Get a DOT medical exam from a provider on the National Registry and a medical examiner's certificate.

- Pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control and road test, in English.
- Get your CDL. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.
What is different in this state
- Test languages
Massachusetts offers the CLP general knowledge exam and all endorsement exams in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
- Learner permit (CLP)
A Massachusetts CLP expires 180 days after issue and can be renewed once for another 180 days at no fee, within 30 days of expiring; otherwise you retake the knowledge tests. You must wait 14 days before the road test.
- Knowledge tests
The general knowledge exam has 50 questions; you need 40 correct (80%) and have 60 minutes.
- Fees
Learner's permit application $30; each endorsement $10 if added with the permit application or $30 on a different day; a new written test after the renewal window is $30.
- Age
You must be 18 for an intrastate (Massachusetts only) CLP and 21 for an interstate CLP.
- Also important
Bus and school bus drivers also deal with the Department of Public Utilities for certificates; skills-test fees are charged for failures, rejections, late arrivals and no-shows.
State-only topics in the manual
- Massachusetts Preface: RMV contacts, state disqualification law (M.G.L. ch. 90F), CLP rules, self-certification, hazmat process, road test sites, lifetime disqualification waiver.
