Steps to your CDL (federal minimums)
- Choose your class (A, B or C) and endorsements.
- Get a DOT medical exam from a provider on the National Registry and a medical examiner's certificate.
- Pass the knowledge tests at the state agency to get your commercial learner's permit (CLP).
- Hold the CLP at least 14 days and practice with a qualified CDL holder. A CLP is valid for up to one year (some states less).
- Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a registered provider.
- Pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control and road test, in English.
- Get your CDL. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.
What is different in this state
- Learner permit (CLP)
A Nebraska CLP is valid for 1 year; hold it at least 14 days before skills tests. If it expires before you pass all three skills segments, any segments already passed are lost and must be retaken.
- Knowledge tests
You must wait at least 1 day to retest after failing a written or skills test. Audio versions of the written tests (except hazmat) are available at all licensing offices.
- Fees
A 5-year Nebraska CDL costs $60 ($55 plus $5 security surcharge); shorter terms cost less, and a class/endorsement change costs $15.
- Age
Class A, B or C CDLs require age 21 for interstate and 18 for intrastate driving. A CDL issued before 21 expires on your 21st birthday.
- Also important
Skills tests are given by the Nebraska DMV or approved third-party testers; third-party appointments must be made at least 2 days ahead. A restricted farm-service CDL (RCDL) for Class B/C is valid up to 210 days in 12 months.
