Steps to your CDL (federal minimums)

  1. Choose your class (A, B or C) and endorsements.
  2. Get a DOT medical exam from a provider on the National Registry and a medical examiner's certificate.
  3. Pass the knowledge tests at the state agency to get your commercial learner's permit (CLP).
  4. Hold the CLP at least 14 days and practice with a qualified CDL holder. A CLP is valid for up to one year (some states less).
  5. Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a registered provider.
  6. Pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control and road test, in English.
  7. Get your CDL. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.

What is different in this state

Knowledge tests

The General Knowledge test has 50 questions, plus a separate test for each endorsement; 80% passes. After a failed knowledge test you wait 7 days, and after 180 days without passing you must renew the test receipt.

Learner permit (CLP)

Knowledge-test scores are valid for 360 days; practice with a CDL holder for 14 days before the road test. Skills-test scores can be banked for one CLP cycle of 180 days if you passed the pre-trip.

Fees

The commercial examination test receipt costs $125 (non-refundable); the commercial permit is $18; a 4-year CDL is $42 plus $2 per endorsement.

Age

You can apply at 18, but drivers under 21 may drive only within New Jersey and cannot get hazmat or passenger endorsements.

Also important

MVC does not supply test vehicles: bring an empty CMV with inspection sticker, insurance and GVWR placards plus a qualified driver. After a failed road test wait at least 2 weeks. In New Jersey, for-hire vehicles for 8–15 people also need a Class C CDL.
