Steps to your CDL (federal minimums)
- Choose your class (A, B or C) and endorsements.
- Get a DOT medical exam from a provider on the National Registry and a medical examiner's certificate.
- Pass the knowledge tests at the state agency to get your commercial learner's permit (CLP).
- Hold the CLP at least 14 days and practice with a qualified CDL holder. A CLP is valid for up to one year (some states less).
- Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a registered provider.
- Pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control and road test, in English.
- Get your CDL. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.
What is different in this state
- Test languages
All Utah CDL tests are given in English only, and translation materials are not allowed.
- Knowledge tests
General Knowledge has 50 questions, Combination 20 and Air Brakes 25; all are closed-book multiple choice and need 80% to pass.
- Learner permit (CLP)
After you pass all required knowledge tests, Utah issues a CLP that is valid for 180 days.
- Fees
The $52 application fee covers the three core tests (2 tries each); a retest fee of $26 applies after that. Endorsement tests cost $9 for 2 tries.
- Age
You must be at least 18; drivers under 21 are limited to driving inside Utah and cannot get hazmat, passenger or school bus endorsements.
- Also important
Utah requires a Class D license held for 1 year before applying, and skills tests may be taken at a DLD office or a CDL third-party tester. Utah paused non-domiciled CDLs on January 20, 2026.
State-only topics in the manual
- 1.1.3 Utah CDL requirements (surrendering other licenses, Division rules).
- 1.2.4–1.2.5 Utah restriction and endorsement codes, including the intrastate K restriction.
- Utah fee schedule and list of Driver License Division offices.
