Steps to your CDL (federal minimums)
- Choose your class (A, B or C) and endorsements.
- Get a DOT medical exam from a provider on the National Registry and a medical examiner's certificate.
- Pass the knowledge tests at the state agency to get your commercial learner's permit (CLP).
- Hold the CLP at least 14 days and practice with a qualified CDL holder. A CLP is valid for up to one year (some states less).
- Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a registered provider.
- Pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control and road test, in English.
- Get your CDL. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.
What is different in this state
- Knowledge tests
You need at least 80% on the knowledge test. If you fail any part, wait 7 days to retest; each $32.50 fee covers 3 tries. Hazmat tests cannot be given orally.
- Learner permit (CLP)
A WV CLP is valid for 180 days and can be renewed 1 time within 2 years of first issue. Hold it at least 14 days before the road test. Only P, S or N endorsements can go on a CLP.
- Fees
The CDL testing fee is $25 (general knowledge, air brakes and combination) plus regular license fees; endorsements are $10 each. The road skills test costs $100, paid to the third-party examiner.
- Age
You must be at least 18 for a CLP; drivers under 21 get an intrastate (WV only) restriction.
- Also important
Road skills tests are scheduled with third-party examiners (often evenings and weekends); a $50 no-show fee applies, and you must bring a vehicle that matches your license class.
State-only topics in the manual
- WV rules front section: who needs a WV CDL, exemptions, Drive for Five, medical and self-certification, age and fitness, identity and residency documents.
- CDL classes, CLP, third-party examiner list and the WV CDL fee chart.
