- Most serious skids are caused by: La mayoría de los derrapes graves se deben a:
- Worn wiper blades
- Low engine oil
- Using cruise control
- Driving too fast for road conditions
Ver respuesta
Driving too fast for road conditionsMost serious skids result from driving too fast for conditions.
- Turning the wheels more sharply than the vehicle can turn
- Giving too much power to the drive wheels
- Braking too hard
- Steering with one hand
Ver respuesta
Turning the wheels more sharply than the vehicle can turnOver-steering is steering more sharply than the vehicle is able to turn.
- Skids can also happen when you use the speed retarder: También puede haber derrape al usar el retardador:
- On dry pavement
- When the truck is empty
- When the road is slippery
- At low rpm
Ver respuesta
When the road is slipperySkids can occur from using the speed retarder on a slippery road.
- By far the most common type of skid is: El tipo de derrape más común con diferencia es:
- A front-wheel skid
- A drive-wheel (rear-wheel) skid
- A trailer-only skid
- A hydroplaning skid
Ver respuesta
A drive-wheel (rear-wheel) skidThe most common skid is when the rear drive wheels lose traction from too much braking or acceleration.
- Your drive wheels start spinning on ice when you accelerate. The easy fix is to: Sus ruedas motrices patinan en el hielo al acelerar. La solución fácil es:
- Brake hard
- Turn the wheel sharply
- Shift to a higher gear
- Take your foot off the accelerator (push in the clutch if very slippery)
Ver respuesta
Take your foot off the accelerator (push in the clutch if very slippery)Acceleration skids stop when you let off the accelerator. On very slippery roads, push in the clutch so the wheels can roll freely.
- A jackknife
- A front-wheel skid
- Hydroplaning
- Brake fade
Ver respuesta
A jackknifeThe trailer can push the towing vehicle sideways, causing a sudden jackknife.
- Why do locked rear wheels tend to slide sideways?
- They have more traction than rolling wheels
- The trailer pulls them straight
- Locked wheels have less traction than rolling wheels
- The front wheels lose grip first
Ver respuesta
Locked wheels have less traction than rolling wheelsLocked wheels have less traction than rolling wheels, so the rear tends to slide sideways to catch up with the front.
- Brake harder
- Stop braking
- Accelerate
- Turn off the engine
Ver respuesta
Stop brakingStop braking so the rear wheels can roll again; then counter-steer.
- As a skidding vehicle turns back on course, why must you counter-steer quickly?
- To lock the wheels again
- To turn on the ABS
- To make the trailer brake
- The vehicle tends to keep turning and may skid the other way
Ver respuesta
The vehicle tends to keep turning and may skid the other wayUnless you quickly turn the wheel the other way, the vehicle may skid in the opposite direction.
- A large driving range or skid pad
- An icy highway at night
- A busy parking lot
- A mountain downgrade
Ver respuesta
A large driving range or skid padSkid recovery takes a lot of practice, best done on a large driving range or skid pad.
- Which is a cause of front-wheel skids? ¿Cuál es una causa de derrape delantero?
- Too much weight on the front axle
- New front tires
- Not enough weight on the front axle
- Driving too slowly
Ver respuesta
Not enough weight on the front axleFront-wheel skids are mostly from driving too fast, but also from worn front tread and too little weight on the front axle.
- In a front-wheel skid, the only way to stop the skid is to: En un derrape delantero, la única forma de detenerlo es:
- Turn the wheel harder
- Let the vehicle slow down, easing off turning and hard braking
- Accelerate
- Pull the parking brake
Ver respuesta
Let the vehicle slow down, easing off turning and hard brakingThe front end keeps going straight. Stop turning and/or braking so hard and slow down without skidding.
- In a front-wheel skid, the front of the vehicle tends to: En un derrape delantero, el frente del vehículo tiende a:
- Swing toward the trailer
- Spin in a circle
- Lift off the ground
- Go straight ahead no matter how much you turn the wheel
Ver respuesta
Go straight ahead no matter how much you turn the wheelIn a front-wheel skid the front end tends to keep going straight regardless of steering.
